Event description

Description

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Committee on Research in Art & Art History will host the annual art inspirational meeting on Monday 22 October 2018.

PROGRAM:

16:30 Lecture by Artist Ed Atkins: “‘The act of seeing with ones own eyes”

Taking its title from the notorious Stan Brakhage film of the same name, Ed Atkins' presentation will assess how silence is synonymous with seriousness, and so with realism.

With the advent of the talkie in cinema, silence became a decision. To choose silence is, by degree, political. Sound is scarcely resistible as a presumption of veracity within the moving image, so silence becomes a trope of anti-illusionary filmmaking: a way to emphasise the impossible gap between a representation and its subject. As a result the subject’s integrity is affirmed as irrecuperable; ‘reality’ is adjourned and, perversely, stressed. The absence of sound serves to deafen the viewer into a kind of submission to their immanent reality, rather than the seeming reality onscreen – revealing the viewer’s interiority to themselves in a manner that is entirely reflexive. In the silence I hear my thoughts. In so doing, silence describes my body. Adding foley to deliberately silent moving image works is to caricature the silence, the seriousness, and any kind of realism.

Atkins’ presentation will bring together both Brakhage’s silent documentary film of autopsies in Pittsburgh in the early seventies (as well as the exhibition Atkins is curating for the Schinkel Pavillon within which the film and its new, separate, soundtrack will be presented) and several of Atkins’ own works.
