The New Baltimore Hand Dance Association is pleased to honor Norma Miller, the Queen of Swing, on Saturday, November 5, 2016 from 6pm to 10pm at the Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, MD. The event will serve as a ceremony to honor her legacy and to raise funds for the Norma Miller Project - a program that offers young dancers the opportunity to study and perform abroad. A portion of the proceeds will also go to support the arts department of The Academies of Frederick Douglass High School. Events will also be held the Friday and Sunday.
An original dancer of the Savoy Club in New York City, Norma is the only living Lindy Hopper of that era. In addition to dance, Norma is an author, choreographer, comedian and actor whose career spans over seven decades. In 2003, she was honored with a National Heritage Foundation Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts, and she is the subject of a 72-minute documentary, “Queen of Swing”, released in 2006. At 96 years old, Norma still performs and has been instrumental in spreading awareness and preserving this great American artform. As part of our mission, NBHDA is working to preserve the legacy of Ms. Miller and the dance she has loved, practiced and promoted for nearly a century.
Founded in 1994, NBHDA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit chapter of the National Hand Dance Association that operates with the goal to teach and chronicle the history of hand dance and other dances indigenous to the African American experience.
