Event description
We can no longer simply serve our community - we must defend it! Learn how to advocate for what you believe in.

About this Event

Advocacy: Yes you can and yes you must!

This workshop is presented as a collaboration with Lead180 Consulting. Nonprofits should represent the interests of the people they serve through public education and public policy advocacy, as well as by encouraging board members, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders to participate in public affairs of the community. When appropriate to advance the organization's mission, nonprofits should engage in promoting public participation in community affairs and elections. As such, they should communicate in an effective manner to educate, inform, and engage the public. This workshop will provide you with the resources to advance your mission-driven organization through public policy.

Objectives:

1. Participants will develop a board policy on advocacy defining the process by which the organization determines positions on specific issues.

2. Participants will work closely with other attendees to practice learned skills to influence public policies that affect the organization's ability to achieve its mission.

3. Participants will be provided with a broad legal overview on how charitable nonprofits must be diligent in assuring they do not participate or intervene in any political campaign activities.

Presenter:

Martha Collins of Lead180 Consulting is an experienced, nonprofit leader and human rights activist. For nearly two decades, she has fought on the front lines to enhance the lives of low-income children, families and communities throughout Wisconsin. In her previous work experiences, she has excelled in empowering, organizing, and mobilizing people from diverse economic, social and cultural backgrounds to work together for positive change
