Event Details

In a one day intensive at The Center for Community Preservation and Planning, attendees will learn how to find and use facts and data to build strong collaborative teams in their community.

In advance of the Learning Lab, The Center’s team of experts will accumulate data, maps, research and analysis specific to each attendee’s community

Within a classroom environment, attendees will:

  • Understand how to use facts, data, maps and other visuals as tools for building collaboration
  • Learn where and how to access data and maps relevant to their community
  • Create community-specific portfolios filled with fact-based tools

Participants will create a personalized step by step process for how to begin building stronger collaboration within their community.

Working through the Center for Community Preservation and Planning, a local nonprofit community organization, and the Newton County Leadership Collaborative, which represents all local governments and other key stakeholders, the county and its jurisdictions have moved from fragmentation to collaborative action for a smarter approach to growth. Together, they have developed the 2050 Plan, a framework for sustainable growth designed to align local plans, ordinances, land use decisions, and capital investments across the county.

The overarching themes are that collaboration can best be built using facts and successful stewardship ultimately depends on the cultivation and promotion of communitywide, cross-sector collaboration to achieve goals.

The result is a visionary approach to managing growth and development in the rural South and beyond. The local officials, the center, and community are guided by a framework that has come to be known as the Newton Model.

The Intent of the Learning Lab is to showcase how facts, data, research and analysis helped create the exemplary partnership and community engagement taking place in Newton County, GA – an approach that can be applied to any small town, city or county around the country.
