Description

The New York Urban League Young Professionals invites you to our November General Body Meeting: The New Black Wall Street! This GBM will be centered around economic empowerment and entrepreneurship.

In 1921, Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Greenwood District, known as Black Wall Street, was one of the most prosperous African-American communities in the United States. The creation of this powerful black community allowed for African-Americans to build a wealthy self-sustainable life for themselves and support their community in the times of segregation. On May 31, 1921 the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 began, and for two days’ white people burned down the neighborhood killing three hundred people, and leaving nine thousand African-Americans homeless. Within five years of the destruction of Black Wall Street, the residents rebuilt the community to the vital thriving place of the past.

The purpose of this event is to garner and translate lessons learned from the previous Black Wall Street by teaching about the economic power of the Black dollar. We will show that through supporting our Black owned businesses we are able to increase profitability for our community. The New Black Wall Street theme will be translated through supporting businesses who have learned that in order to be successful in today’s world you need to have a digital social presence.

"The New Black Wall Street: Learning from the past, building a legacy for the future," also pairs as the National Day of Empowerment, a National initiative which YPs worldwide are participating in!

So, join us as we hone in on black consumer power, while showcasing local black entrepreneurs and businesses of Young Professionals in NYC!
