About this Event

Judges Program: Pharmacological Effects of Alcohol and DrugsThursday, October 3, 2019 | 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Faculty: Dr. Kenneth D. Robinson, President of Correctional Counseling, Inc., Memphis, TN

Dr. Ken Robinson will teach about the psychopharmacological effects of alcohol, prescription drugs, and illegal drugs on brain neurobiology and function. He will explore addiction, psychoactive substances and substance abuse among drivers of various ages. Finally, he will describe how use of these substances affect the cognitive and motor skills necessary for driving.

Judges & Attorneys Program: Artificial Intelligence - Beyond the Algorithm: Who’s Writing the Brief? Who’s Ruling the Bench? Who makes decisions?

Thursday, October 3, 2019 | 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.

Faculty: Nicolas Economou is the CEO of electronic discovery and information retrieval firm H5 and the chair of the Law Committee of the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems. He has been a long-time advocate of the application of scientific methods to electronic discovery.

Artificial intelligence (AI) will affect every aspect of society. The legal community will not be immune to the development of AI. Judges and lawyers, as well as the citizens, organizations, and institutions who depend on the legal system, will be impacted by the growing use of machines in every aspect of the civil and criminal justice systems. Judges will increasingly be asked to consider using AI to determine recidivism risk and sentences for criminal offenders. Lawyers will routinely rely on AI in electronic discovery, the drafting of briefs, the analysis of judicial opinions, and the development of legal arguments tailored to specific judges. To what extent, and on what basis, should the legal community, and ordinary citizens, trust (or mistrust!) AI in the legal system and the practice of law?
