Event Details

In 1830, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was founded. This first truly American church has given birth to a worldwide congregation of over 15 million. The last decade has seen tremendous growth, and the Mormons have been in the news all over the world.

Mass media stories of the Mormon church have, for the most part, been told by those outside of the church. Mormon characters on stage have been few and far between, despite their central importance in settling the American West. Outside observers have created shows satirizing them and holding them up for criticism, but what about the stories told by those who were born in the faith? What are their stories like?

The Mormon Playwrights reading series aims to explore the stories of mainstream Mormonism through published plays by established Mormon storytellers.

In the first play, Facing East, a middle-aged Mormon couple deals with the suicide of their gay son. This timely play by Carol Lynn Pearson explores issues of faith, sexual orientation, and how a conservative religion deals with changing times.

In the second play, Hancock County, it’s just months after Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon church, was shot to death with his brother in Carthage Jail. The men who were brought to trial colluded with the judge to get the Mormons kicked off of the jury, and attempted to intimidate witnesses out of testifying. In this true story we learn what happens to these men, and how the Mormons were driven out of Hancock County, Missouri, leading to their settlement in what is now modern day Utah.

Readings of these two plays will happen on these dates at Ekko Mobiles Studio at 828 NW 19th (near NW 19th Ave and Kearney). Entrance is outside, on the North side of the building, next to the large garage door.
