Description

Shadowbox is proud to present The Modern School of Film (@modschooloffilm) an international, critically-acclaimed film school and discussion series that explores culture through the lens of the films we love and the "why we love them."

Film Studies for All! is The Modern School of Film's acclaimed four-film primer, featuring a quartet of movies that reflect both the height of the medium, and the vastness of its reach. All films in the series will be dissected and discussed frame-by-frame and in real time (i.e. as the movie plays in front of you) by Modern School of Film founder Robert Milazzo. Whether you're a film hobbyist, practitioner, or simply love watching movies, you'll enjoy this informative, relaxed course that looks into the heart of each film.

Free popcorn, BYO beverage or sample what's on hand.

Buy a series ticket for $30 to see all four screenings, or $10 for an individual film.

SCHEDULE

Th 2/23 - NIGHT OF THE HUNTER
Charles Laughton's noir fairy-tale defines the very term "ahead of its time". Robert Mitchum and Lillian Gish (and a small donkey!) all take a trip down the river and through the looking glass. This film continues to convert new legions of fans, and inspire generations of filmmakers.

Th 3/9 - FUNNY GAMES (1997)
Michael Haneke takes on the states of television, violence, and irony in a film that will not leave your system. You can't look away, and you don't want to -- which is Haneke's point, and his obsession.

Th 3/23 - UNFAITHFULLY YOURS
A film that could have been made last month, let alone in 1948! Preston Sturges was the first-ever writer/director, smashing a mold that all since have been trying to stitch back together. You won't believe what you're laughing at! And you'll long for the days when comedies appealed both to one's intelligence and one's "lesser" instincts.

Th 3/30 - SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK
The word "masterpiece" is sadly over-used. So, save it for Charlie Kaufman's magna opus. A film that will long outlive our love of cinema, our fascination with cities, and what it means to love and connect, everyday.

Since its launch, The Modern School of Film has featured hundreds of master-class discussions featuring guests from the worlds of film, music, performance, comics, and culture.
