Learn the Art of Screenwriting with FilmGate Miami!

In this four-week class, students will develop and workshop their own content and leave with the tools to begin their professional career as writers!

This class will emphasize hands-on skill-building, with in-class exercises each week that put these lesons into practice. At the end of the week, students will have either a complete short script or the opening and treatment of a feature film. Don't forget your laptop!


Week One: How to Write a Script

  • Learn the fundamentals of screenwriting of any format: plot structure, character arcs, and narrative style
  • Understand why writing matters, and why writing is the reason most movies sink or sail
  • Analyze exerpts of great scripts across genres and formats, and learn how to read like a writer
  • Group Discussion: Identify your strengths and find your voice
  • Exercise: Come up with a brand-new script idea to be developed in class!

Week Two: Developing Your Story

  • Learn how to maximize your strengths as a writer and practice your weaknesses
  • Learn the differences between shorts, film, and TV
  • Group Discussion: Favorite stories and characters
  • Exercise: Plot & character outlines
  • Exericse: Pitch sesssion!

Week Three: Writing and Rewriting

  • Learn how to read critically and edit your own content
  • Figure out which ideas to prioritize over others
  • Watch selected dialogue scenes across film history
  • Group Discussion: Good dialogue versus bad dialogue
  • Exercise: Scene & dialogue practice
  • Exercise: Stage readings

Week Four: Finishing Up

  • Learn about the notorious "Third Act Problems" and how to avoid them
  • Discuss different career options for writers and script-sharing options
  • Group Discussion: Good endings versus bad endings
  • Exercise: Workshopping your feature film scene or short script


Instructor Bio

Liam Allen-McGoran is a South Florida writer with a background in spec writing for both TV and film. At the University of Miami, he studied screenwriting with illustrious faculty such as Tom Musca (Stand and Deliver,
Tortilla Soup), Paul Lazarus (Westworld, Hanover Street, Capricorn One) and Turner Classic Movies commentator Scott Eyman. While at the University of Miami, he was selected by the film department to develop the web series "Campus Cop" that was filmed in 2017 and 2018.

Liam's pilot screenplay "The Chafe" is a featured script on The Black List and won the University of Miami's Canes Film Fest award for Best Script in 2016. His feature screenplay "Snake Oil" was a semifinalist in the Script Pipeline and Blue Cat competitions, and also made it to the second round of the Austin Film Festival in 2017. In 2018, his short film "How to Ressurect a Dead Girl" was chosen as an official selection at the Hollywood Shorts Film Festival and catalogued at Grumman's Chinese Theater.

In March, he was accepted to the University of Southern California's masters program in writing for film and television.
