MORNING SESSION
Michigan Commercial Energy Code Update - Three hour Continuing Education Program
Presenter: Tim Mrozowski, AIA LEED AP BD

The School of Planning Design and Construction at Michigan State University will present a three hour Michigan Commercial Energy Code Update Training September 20, 2017 targeted to Architects, Building Officials, Inspectors, Engineers, Contractors, Subcontractors and Suppliers. The three hour seminar will focus on the updated energy code provisions applicable forMichigan which has adopted ASHRAE 90.1 (2013) with Michigan specific amendments. The new code will become effective September 20, 2017. The program will emphasize the architectural related provisions of the new code including envelope requirements and lighting. It will also include commentary on its application in LEED V4 projects.

BIO Information
Tim Mrozowski A.I.A., LEED ® AP BDC, is an architect, professor and Program Leader of the Construction Management, in the School of Planning, Design and Construction at Michigan State University. He conducts research on sustainability, application of LEED® to design and construction, energy codes, energy audits, energy modeling, energy assessment, and construction project management. Since 2003 he has directed and conducted training for the Michigan Energy Code Training and Implementation Project (MECTIP) which has been funded by DTE Energy, US DOE, Pacific North West National Laboratory (PNNL), Michigan Public Service Commission, Michigan State Housing Development Authority, Michigan Bureau of Energy Systems, Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance. To date MECTIP has conducted over 125 energy code and compliance trainings with over 6,000 industry participants.


AFTERNOON SESSION
Performing Construction in Existing Buildings - Three hour Continuing Education Program
Presenter: Brian J. Tognetti, RA, CCCA

The purpose of this presentation is to improve the code awareness of design professionals and the building authority representatives with regard to the code-compliant options that are available when performing construction in existing buildings. The program, with an emphasis on the application of the ‘work area method’ of the 2015 Michigan Rehabilitation Code for Existing Buildings (MRCEB), will also include commentary on provisions in the MRCEB that could be aligned with the objectives of LEED v4 projects.

An attendee of the presentation should leave the seminar with an improved ability to identify and generally understand the following content objectives:
• Identify the applicable code options for new buildings v. existing buildings
• Discuss the philosophy and summarized history of code provisions for existing buildings
• Review the different types of construction activity in the MRCEB (i.e., repair, alterations,
change of occupancy and addition) and their code requirements
• Explore lessons learned from practical application of these MRCEB provisions from various case studies

BIO Information
Brian J. Tognetti, RA, CCCA, of Wiss, Janney Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) has over 20 years of architectural experience; is a registered architect in the states of Michigan, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee; and is a member of the Southeast Michigan Building Officials and Inspectors Association (SEMBOIA), International Code Council (ICC), the Metropolitan Detroit Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), and is Vice-Chairperson of AIA Detroit’s Building Codes and Regulations Committee (AIAD BCRC). In his professional career, Mr. Tognetti has often researched and advised internal and external clients on the minimum code requirements, or compliance alternatives, with regard to construction activity in both new and existing buildings. In this capacity, he meets or corresponds with representatives of various authorities having jurisdiction and provides expertise on code-related requirements during various project types, including litigious projects. Through the combined efforts of AIAD BCRC and SEMBOIA, Mr. Tognetti expands the architectural profession code awareness to help effectively bridge the relationship between the building authority and the design Professional.
