Description

THE U.S. CIVIL WAR RESULTED IN THE FORGING OF A SECOND CONSTITUTION. IN TIME IT TRANSFORMED THE STRUCTURES OF U.S. GOVERNANCE. YET THIS NEW CONSTITUTION HAD NO SINGLE LEGACY. THE FOURTEENTH AMENDMENT WAS BORN IN STRIFE, AND IT BIRTHED AN ENDURING LEGACY OVER THE MEANINGS AND LIMITS OF EQUALITY, LIBERTY, AND CITIZENSHIP. TO MARK THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOURTEENTH AMENDMENT, THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI WILL HOST A RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM. IT WILL EXPLORE THE CAUSES, CONSEQUENCES, AND CHARACTER OF THE MANY FOURTEENTH AMENDMENTS

GENEROUS FUNDING IS PROVIDED BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT, OFFICE OF THE PROVOST, COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES, LAW SCHOOL, CENTER FOR THE HUMANITIES, RICHTER LIBRARY, AND THE DEPARTMENTS OF HISTORY, ENGLISH, AND POLITICAL SCIENCE.
