Structure: solid and architectural, the word does not immediately excite. Character, setting, style, or voice—all of these elements of fiction can sound vastly more enticing.

As prose writers, however, structure is one of the most magical and practical tools we have. Structure helps us to organize and share our story to the greatest effect, and yet it is more than beautiful brickwork.

As the poet Daniel Hall once said, “Form is not a prison, but a theater.”

In this one-day workshop, we’ll discover the way structure, or form, allows us to play, test boundaries, and to shake up our habits as writers. During the workshop, we’ll explore some of the major narrative shapes fiction and prose writers use, from frame narratives to stories that move backwards through time.

In the morning, we will ground our exploration with examples from short stories and novels. In the afternoon, we will use what we’ve learned to begin restructuring–and breathing new life into–our own pages. Writers should bring a copy of a story or chapter they’re eager to revise.
