Asian Americans have an important role to play in the movement for racial justice. We have a long and complicated relationship with race and racism in this country. We have been targets of systemic racism, US imperialism, and harmful racial stereotyping. We also have a long history of solidarity and activism in racial justice movements under leadership from Grace Lee Boggs, Yuri Kochiyama, and others. And we have been complicit in anti-Black racism too, as demonstrated by Asian American support for anti affirmative action movements, Asian police officers involved in the killing of Black people, and many other examples.
We are currently living through a global pandemic, climate crisis, and attacks on democracy that are deepening existing inequities in health, education, economic opportunity, and more. We are also living through the largest movement for racial justice that we have ever seen, a movement that is calling upon white and non-Black people of color to take a stand in solidarity with the movement for Black lives and practice stronger allyship. Asian Americans have an important role to play in coming together with our communities and taking action--at the polls, in the streets, and by flowing resources--in support of Black and Indigenous liberation!
The Lunar Project is creating:
- Transformational Learning, Community Building + Giving - 12 week community education cohorts and giving circles for Asian Americans to build community, learn about Asian Americans’ relationship to race and racism in the US, pool resources, and move $100K of capital to Black and Indigenous-led organizations.
- Solidarity Funding - We are building towards a $20M+ fund that is rooted in solidarity, racial justice, and trust, that will deploy patient, flexible, integrated capital to Black and Indigenous-led organizations, businesses, and community developments. The fund will be governed by a community advisory group of Black and Indigenous movement and community development leaders, who will make funding decisions and help us build our pipeline.
