Program Description

The role of the CFO has expanded significantly in the past decade.  The skill of the “old school” CFO – financial reporting, compliance and expense management – have been replaced by skills that better support the needs of organizations competing in an increasingly complex economic world.  Now more than ever, organizations need strategic, collaborative and versatile CFOs - executives who truly understand how the business works and what financial strategies best support it. So what are the skills that we as CFOs need, and where should we focus our development?

Join the Los Angeles CFO Leadership Council for “Habits of Highly Effective CFOs.”  This panel discussion offers a diverse cross-section of business leaders who interact with chief financial officers on a daily basis.  The professionals will share their insights into what truly make a highly effective CFO. 

 

Learning Objectives:

In this session, our speakers will discuss how CFOs can:

  • Clarify and drive company strategy, raise executive accountability to stock holders, investors, employees and the public at large
  • How to balance competing and conflicting demand from disparate contingencies
  • Embrace their position as a custodian and manager of key business performance metrics, and effectively communicate those metrics to their key stake holders
  • Expectations of Chief Financial Officers in fast growing companies
  • Nurture transparency and trust at all company levels

CFO Leadership Council members from all our chapters may also attend for free. Non-member senior financial executives who are CFOs, Vice Presidents of Finance, Directors of Finance and Controllers (or the like) are welcome to attend this program for $65. 

Please note that service providers or any executives who are not senior financial executives (CFOs, Vice Presidents of Finance, Controllers, Directors of Finance, etc.) will not be admitted attendance to this event. The CFO Leadership Council reserves the right to decline any registration.

Speaker Bios:

Kevin Anderson, Office Managing Partner, Tatum

Kevin Anderson has been providing executive leadership to professional service and management consulting organizations for over 25 years. He has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to build and lead top performing sales, operations, and customer service teams. His leadership style, passion, and personality have consistently resulted in outstanding revenue growth and profitability in companies from start-up to global enterprises. 

Mr. Anderson currently serves as the Office Managing Partner for Tatum, a national professional services firm that delivers consulting and resource solutions to the Office of the CFO.  Prior to this he had significant tenures in public accounting, Grant Thornton and Ernst and Young, and in technology, Creo, Xpedior and Hagen Systems.

  

Matt Crowley, Principal - Crowley Corp. Legal Strategy, Adjunct Professor,  & Author 

Mr. Crowley practiced law before, during and after the dot.com boom in Silicon Valley with California's largest two law firms: Pillsbury Madison & Sutro and Morrison & Foerster. 

While working with both San Francisco firms, Mr. Crowley's practice focused on mergers & acquisitions, venture capital, entity formation and public offerings. Mr. Crowley's clients included Chevron, Pacific Bell, Thomson SA, Evoke Software and numerous Silicon Valley start-ups.

While with Morrison & Foerster, Mr. Crowley was loaned to Banc of America Securities. Mr. Crowley provided advice to the investment banking team regarding public offerings, venture financings and fairness opinions for mergers and acquisitions.

After eight years of private practice, Mr. Crowley moved into senior management with Evoke Software, a San Francisco business integration software provider to Fortune 500 businesses. Mr. Crowley assisted the 200-employee company with several rounds of financing, handled all customer and vendor negotiations, managed all corporate governance matters with the board and legal issues related to employment contracts and layoffs. Mr. Crowley learned the critical importance of managing the legal budget of a small growth company.

In 2004, Mr. Crowley joined the management team at Technicolor Home Entertainment Services in Camarillo, California. Technicolor's HES unit had revenues of $2 billion annually, providing movie studios and video game developers with DVD manufacturing. Mr. Crowley negotiated with Technicolor's studio customers, managed litigation matters and was deeply involved in structuring and overseeing Technicolor's acquisitions, joint ventures and other large corporate projects.

In 2006, Mr. Crowley established Crowley Corporate Legal Strategy to offer corporate legal services to entrepreneurs looking to grow their businesses.

Mr. Crowley is the author of Getting in the Game: Guiding your startup through the world of venture capital and angel investors.

Specialties: Mergers & acquisitions, securities, private placements, software licensing, corporate formation, corporate governance.

 

Steve Dickstein, CEO/CFO, Cosmetic Design Group 

Steven Dickstein's 30 year career spans a wide range of leading consumer goods organizations with a proven track record of accelerating growth and EBITDA improvement. His accomplishments as a line-operating manager have been with both top tier academy companies including Clorox and Mars/Masterfoods where he was Vice President for North American Pet Food Brands responsible for a $1.5 billion business and smaller/middle market companies. For the last ten years, he has led revitalizations for privately held and private equity backed firms. He was CEO at Cosmetic Design Group, a leading cosmetics supplier to large beauty retailers where he led a successful sale transaction after similar positions as CEO of Hugo Naturals personal care products and President of Freeman Beauty Labs. In each turnaround or scale-up situation, Steve effectively partners with the business founder, with oversight of the new ownership team, to maximize enterprise value through his professional leadership approach which complements the more entrepreneurial style of the business founder.

His diverse business experience includes accomplishments across personal/beauty care, pet food, laundry/household products, fresh packed produce, ready meals and snack food categories, in both established organizations and entrepreneurial/start-up environments. Steve is also credited with personally launching and expanding availability into Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan, and even China.

Steve received his Masters of Business Administration, magna cum laude, from the University of California at Los Angeles Anderson School of Management. He is an avid tennis player and volunteers for Project Chicken Soup, a non-profit organization that supports people living with HIV/AIDS. Steve resides in Calabasas, California and has two daughters, 18 and 16 years old.



Sally Knutson, EVP & CFO, Cast & Crew Entertainment Services

Sally Knutson is the EVP and CFO at Cast & Crew Entertainment Services, the premier provider of technology-enabled payroll, production accounting and related value-added services to the entertainment industry.  She is a seasoned finance executive with almost 30 years of financial management, corporate development and strategic planning experience. She has been recognized twice as a “top CFO in the Valley” by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal.

At Cast & Crew, Ms. Knutson has played an integral role in its exponential growth and success.  She oversees Finance, Facilities, Legal and Risk Management, which includes a robust workers compensation program covering entertainment industry production workers.  Cast & Crew was acquired by SilverLake, the global leader in technology investing, in the summer of 2015, and has since completed two acquisitions, Final Draft and CAPS Payroll.   

Prior to joining Cast & Crew, Ms. Knutson held senior finance positions with Discus Dental, Move Inc., Disney Home Entertainment and Dole Food Company.  She started her career at Pricewaterhouse Coopers in audit, servicing the entertainment industry. 

A leader in her community, Ms. Knutson is on the board of the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and Greater East Valley, where great futures start.  The club provides a community and culture of caring where members can participate in educational, athletic and artistic programs, including a specialized program for deaf and hard of hearing children. A child is never turned away for an inability to pay.

Ms. Knutson graduated with honors from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in Economics with an emphasis in Business.
