My name is Fathia M. Absie. I am a Somali American freelance writer and filmmaker. A former Voice Of America broadcaster/reporter who, after many years of working as a social worker with an immensely diverse population and different communities, decided that it was time to pursue a life-long dream of storytelling. “I consider myself a humanist and I value a good conversation. I beleive that it's the key to knwing one another and starting a frienship in any cultural differences between people. Not knowing one another is to not care about each other and hearing and sharing our stories can change all that.”

“Broken Dreams” (2010) was my first documentary film. This is the story of the Somali youth that went to join Al-Shabab and the impact it had in the Somali community here in Minnesota and other parts of the U.S.  This film is used as a community dialogue project in both Canada and the U.S as well as a training tool in many U.S Embassies in Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

I also self-published my first book, “The Imperceptible Peacemaker,” a graphic novel about a global super hero who fights tyranny, injustice and other crimes against humanity around the world.
