About this Event

The story

The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White (1970) | What a beautiful story, not only of swans, but of embracing differences, exceeding expectations, and excelling despite (even because of) difficulties. Louis is a trumpeter swan who can’t make any sound. As observed by a thoughtful child, Sam, Louis does everything he can to win the lovely swan Serena, without success. When his father steals a trumpet for him, Louis shares his feelings through the power of music–and finally finds his voice. The Trumpet of the Swan is one of those books that’s just as enthralling for adults, and makes you want to read everything the author ever wrote!

The workshop

A few weeks before our workshop, we'll send your child a LitWits Kit of supplies. (See what that looks like here. Note that our supplies always include a story-related snack, but we'll let you know what that is ahead of time, so you can replace as necessary.)

The kit includes the book, which should be read or listened to before the workshop. It's fine to use your own heavily abridged and/or audio version instead--whatever makes the book more enjoyable for your child.

In the workshop, we'll spend three sensory, creative hours doing what the characters and author did, and learning all kinds of valuable lessons from them! (Learn more about our experiential workshops here.)

Kids have a blast opening their LitWits Kits in class, removing each item step by step in a “slow reveal,” as we talk, work, and play our way through the story’s narrative arc.

Date: Wednesday, February 3, 2021 (AM and PM sessions are for different ages) - Registration closes January 4

Ages: The morning session (9a-12pm PST) is for ages 7+; the afternoon session (1-4p PST) is for ages 10+. Older kids are welcome to attend the younger session, but not the other way around. Learn how the content differs here, under "Details."

Cost: The cost for the first child is $65; the price for each additional sibling is $50. Prices include a LitWits Kit of supplies. LitWits is an approved vendor for Ocean Grove Charter School: use promo code CHARTER on the ticket page to register without prepaying.

Cancellation policy: We can offer refunds only for orders cancelled 30 days prior to the workshop; by then we've already bought (and possibly already shipped) nonreturnable supplies. Unfortunately, we can't offer makeups.
