Event description
Beautifully scored musical about a mother and daughter, travelling in Europe in 1953, who find an unlikely love....but it's complicated.

About this Event

A breath-takingly beautiful score supports the story of triumphant love, when an unlikely couple find happiness in Italy. Margaret Johnson, an American, is travelling across Europe in 1953 with her daughter, Clara. While in Florence, Clara meets a young Italian, & the two fall in love.....but it’s complicated.

The Light in the Piazza is a musical with a book by Craig Lucas and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel. Based on the 1960 novella by Elizabeth Spencer, the story is set in the 1950s and revolves around Margaret Johnson, a wealthy Southern woman, and Clara, her daughter, who is developmentally disabled due to a childhood accident. The two spend a summer together in Italy. When Clara falls in love with a young Italian man, Margaret is forced to reconsider not only Clara's future, but her own deep-seated hopes and regrets as well.

The award-winning score sets the tone for a love story between Clara, a developmentally delayed American woman, and Fabrizio, an Italian man who is instantly smitten by Clara when he catches her hat that was blown in the wind.

The score breaks from the 21st century tradition of pop music on Broadway by moving into the territory of NeoRomantic classical music and opera, with unexpected harmonic shifts and extended melodic structures, and is more heavily orchestrated than most Broadway scores.
