Ross Butler has been interested in electronics since he was five years old. In the mid-70s, that interest developed into a fascination with computers and computer programming. After a long and fruitful career in application software development, he returned to school to fulfill his dream of earning a degree in electrical engineering. Ross graduated from Boise State University in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering. He then continued his education, earning a master’s degree in computer engineering in 2012. During graduate school, he gained valuable, practical experience with computer hardware and software design and integration while working in the Hartman Systems Integration Laboratory at BSU. In 2013, he was introduced to LED light art when he worked as a volunteer with a Boise, Idaho-based group to construct Marvin the Vortexagon, a large-scale art installation featured as a CORE project at Burning Man that year. His participation in that project, the exposure to innovative and eclectic art at Burning Man, and his knowledge of computers and electronics came together in a perfect storm that produced a passion for creating LED light art hardware and software. In 2016, he and a group known as the Coneheads Local 208 created Illumicone, a twenty-foot-tall, highly interactive light art installation that appeared at Burning Man and several regional events in 2016 and 2017. Ross is currently building a small business, Chroma-Cat LLC, that specializes in creating LED light systems for decorative and artistic uses.

What inspires you?

"I am fascinated by the power and possibilities of microcontrollers—computer chips that cost only a few dollars and use little energy yet can perform amazing functions. I am inspired by the challenge of taking an abstract idea, such as an interactive art concept or a colorful new light pattern, and turning it into something tangible with the fusion of microcontrollers, sensors, software, and creativity. That inspiration is fueled by the need for continual learning about new electronic components and software techniques that I can use to turn ideas into reality."
