Event description

Description

The Varsity is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Martin Scorsese film documenting The Band’s final concert on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 1976, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. “The Last Waltz” was released in 1978 to critical acclaim.

The Last Waltz 40th Anniversary Concert at The Varsity is Saturday, Nov. 24, and features music performed that historic night 42 years ago. The show is being produced by local musician and audio engineer Marshall Anderson, whose band Lone Howl – Anderson, Christopher Brown, Mike Arthur, Jonny Coller and Kegan Doty – will be filling in for The Band, who backed Bob Dylan when he went electric.

Other featured performers are Tawl Paul, Ethan Stephenson, Kali Lynn, Eastwood Frisch, Sarah Lannom, Ol’ Moose, Danny Brown, Ben West, Randy Auxier, Katie Foley, Chris McKinley and Tobias Merriman. Filling in on horns will be Matt Martino, Robb Smith and Cameron Taylor.

This special show will take place in The Big Room, the largest performance space in the building, with seating for 515. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24. Doors and The Varsity Bar will open at 7. The bar features beer, wine, select cocktails, other beverages, popcorn and snacks. All bar proceeds support continuing improvements and maintenance for the historic venue.
