Event description

Description

In this two day conference workshop you will be exploring and discovering the meaning-making and communicative strategies of young children when they are involved in languages of drawing. When engaged graphically, young children are not just making marks across a piece of paper but are communicating their ideas and thoughts about the world in a context of creative inquiry. Children’s creative inquiry can be found within drawings they make independently and in the drawings they make as part of a group. This conference workshop will explore ways of facilitating and engaging with children's creative inquiry process and make visible the ways in which you can use the languages of drawing to amplify children’s thinking and the expression of their ideas and thinking. Participants will be able to practically engage in drawing workshops designed to help you plan creative, inquiry based graphical learning situations for your own children.

The days are lead and supported by Debi Keyte-Hartland and Louise Lowings. Debi is an international freelance consultant and artist -educator. She works directly with teachers and senior leadership teams developing creative and reflective approaches to curriculum design that nurtures inquiry based approaches to learning. In doing so, and working with the direct experiences of children, she illuminates what is possible with young children in contexts of creative, reflective and researchful practices. Debi holds strong beliefs regarding the idea that children are born to learn, to make-meaning, and communicate what they know and find out to others which demands of the teacher to be open to the unexpected and multiple directions of the children’s motivations and inquiries.

Louise is a head teacher at Madeley Nursery School in Telford situated in the West Midlands of England. She has a life-long passion and belief that arts, creativity, imagination, fantasy and expression stand alongside what are often considered foundation curriculum subjects such as science, mathematics and literacy. Louise believes that not only do they have equal value but are part of an intricate web or pattern of learning where each element gives value, illumination and new possibilities to the other. She is an experienced trainer and presents at conferences, seminars and workshops on using creative practice to support thinking and learning. On a daily basis she teaches within the school atelier or studio room which is where she generates her practical experience, wide knowledge, passion and commitment.

Debi and Louise have been conversing and latterly working together researching children’s languages of expression and thinking since they met nearly twenty years ago in the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. Both returning many times over, it was and continues to be an experience that gives direction and purpose to their professional practice as they continue to engage with the joyful, transformative and inspiring pedagogical approach. This conference workshop enables them to share their research during this time to an audience interested in developing pedagogical approaches that are both joyful and attuned to the processes of how children learn in contexts of inquiry.
