Event description

Description

The Koinonia Foundation Gala is a semi-formal event where Knoxville's community leaders come together for an evening of generosity to celebrate the lifetime experience of our Legacy Camps and We Adapt Programs. As a network of professionals in Knox County and surrounding areas, we see an incredible opportunity to be a catalyst of change by supporting citizens with disabilities and University of Tennessee students.

The Koinonia Foundation of Tennessee serves individuals with disabilities by providing quality programs that improve overall well-being and foster independence while providing respite care for families. The Koinonia Foundation of Tennessee fills this need by putting on a week-long residential camp, two weekend camps, and local Knoxville programs for youth and adults with a variety of disabilities. Our extended programs allow for the independence necessary for each of our participants to grow and reach one's full potential.

Camp Koinonia is our week long residential program for youth ages 7-21 with multiple disabilities. The two weekend camps are Camp Oginali, for campers with Down Syndrome, and Koinonia Retreat, for participants 21 and up who have aged out of the Camp Koinonia age bracket. All three of our overnight camps provide meaningful, experiential learning opportunities for university students and participants, some with severe disabilities, in an outdoor learning environment. Our camps are unique in that each camper has his/her very own counselor. This 1:1 ratio is possible through our partnership with The Therapeutic Recreation Program at The University of Tennessee.

The Koinonia Foundation of Tennessee understands that after the age of 21, recreational opportunities decrease dramatically. In an effort to fill the gap of the lack of social and recreational opportunities, we have created our 'We Adapt' expanded services program. We are working on expanding the length of these programs to provide respite care for families.

Koinonia means 'fellowship' and 'caring community’ in Greek. This is exactly what we strive to create by providing an enriching and inclusive experience that fosters emotional, social, and physical benefits to all our participants. We hope that you too will join our caring community that contributes to our students, families, and citizens with disabilities in Knoxville.

The Koinonia Foundation Gala will be held Thursday, November 1st at Bridgewater Place. Guests will enjoy an evening of cocktails, live music by The Wes Bailey Trio and a program led by WVLT's Amanda Hara, Keynote Speech by The University of Tennessee Athletic Director, Phillip Fulmer, and testimonies about the impact of our services from our participants.

It is time to create more opportunities for recreation participation for our community members with disabilities.

We hope you will take this opportunity into consideration. If you have any questions, please reach out to Jacqui pearl at jpearl@kftn.org, call (865)-888-7365 or visit www.kftn.org.
