Description

“Road Trip to the “West Side”
Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 8:00 am

We’ll leave at 8:00 am from Bakersfield High School’s Harvey Auditorium parking lot (South) at 1241 G Street, and travel in two vans to the “West Side.” Van seating is limited so please reserve your seat soon. The price for transportation is $30.00. Jayne Hotchkiss-Price will be our tour guide. Our first tour stop will be at the Lakeview Gusher of site of 1910 outside of Maricopa. Next, we’ll journey to Taft and the Historic West Side Oil Museum, and continue down the road the town of Fellows and the site of the Midway/Sunset Gusher site of 1909. Then it's a twenty-minute ride to McKittrick.

Lunch is on your own at the Penny Bar, described as: “… located in the historic McKittrick hotel. It’s not much to look at from the outside, but once inside you will be dazzled by the floor-to-ceiling pennies and the quirky décor. Over one million pennies are glued to everything: the floor, the walls, the pool table, the TV, and more.” In 2002 Huell Howser featured the Penny Bar on his “California Gold” PBS TV show.

Lastly we’ll make a stop at the McKittrick Tar Pit. We’ll be back to BHS no later than 3:30pm. Hope to see you there!
