Technology is everywhere and it’s not going anywhere. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), especially when integrated with other disciplines, are the skills of the future. We need to equip students with the critical skills they need to navigate the world we live in today and thrive in the future.

It’s important for youth to learn to code for a few reasons:

• Coding is a superpower. Learning to code let’s students build – not just consume the technology around them like video games, websites, robots and more.

• Coding helps students develop new ways of thinking. Learning to code helps students develop other crucial and transferable skills – like computational thinking – allowing them to tackle problems, outside the realm of coding, in new and innovative ways.

• Coding helps students understand the world around them better. If we teach biology and mathematics in order to understand the world around them, then knowing the basics of how computers communicate and how to engage with them should be a given.

• Coding can help change the world. Empower students to use technology as a creative tool to build solutions for problems or everyday challenges people face.

• Coding is fun! Students experience the satisfaction and thrill of building something.

The introduction and teaching of coding has been gaining interest and generating buzz the last two years. This seminar is designed to put you in the coding seat and work the projects that you can implement the very next day. As a classroom instructor, myself, it is always my aim to support my colleagues. Practical strategies for Computer Science teachers and tech specialists in these roles classroom facilitators will be infused to assist, even the novice, attempt coding for the first time.

I have designed this seminar specifically to offer resources for the Classroom Instructor, Computer Science Instructors and Technology Integration Specialists on how to facilitate coding in grades 3 -12. Whether you are tech timid or tech savvy, you will find an abundance of resources. I will help you sort through the wealth of resources and highlight for you the best and most effective ones to facilitate coding to students in grades 3 -12. We will look at ways to design lessons and projects to teach and infuse coding into everyday curricula.

Bring your devices! We will be working through many of the projects and you will leave with not only the inspiration, but also complete projects and lessons that you can use with students immediately. There is not just one way to teach coding. I will help you get started and give you the tools and resources you need to move your students onward.

The day promises to be a day filled with practical activities, ideas, tips and resources that will empower you to infuse coding and other apps for your classroom! Bring your laptop or device…we are going to learn the experience the power and joy of coding.
