Event Details

The Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation is pleased to bring to you this important and timely webinar entitled: The Joint Commission New Patient Flow Standards Crowding and Boarding in the ED .

Presenter:  Sue Dill Calloway, RN, MSN, JD, CPHRM

There are new patient flow standards for both 2013 and 2014 for hospitals. The Joint Commission has standards on patient flow to prevent overcrowding and boarding of patients especially patients in the emergency department and in other temporary locations. The Joint Commission also has a patient flow tracer that is used during the survey process. Both of these will be covered in this webinar. Patient flow is a hospital issue that has a major impact on the emergency department. It is recommended that boarding time frames should not exceed four hours. How do you meet this upcoming expectation? Attendees will get a memo summarizing both of these in additional to the power point slides.

The Joint Commission first implemented patient flow standards in 2005. These standards have been amended and the new changes will go into effect January 1, 2013. There are two additional changes that go into effect January 1, 2014. The Joint Commission has issued a R3 Report on patient flow that will be discussed.

This webinar will discuss the new revisions that address patient flow through the emergency department. Revisions include leadership use of data and measures to identify and mitigate and manage patient flow issues and management of ED throughput as a system wide issue. Revisions include safety for boarded patients and leadership communication with behavioral health providers so care of boarded patients is coordinated. Boarding of psychiatric patients has increased and has been especially problematic in many emergency departments

The Joint Commission also revised a provision of care section, PC.01.01.01, because of patient safety issues related to the boarding of behavioral health patients. Emergency department crowding is growing twice as fast as visit and is rising to unsustainable proportions.
