About this event

From its heyday in the interwar period to its significance as a community hub for Holocaust survivors and war refugees, the Jewish Deli has been an integral part of the New York story. How did Jewish immigrants, mostly from Central and Eastern Europe, import and adapt traditions to create a cuisine that became a cornerstone of popular culture with worldwide influence? It's time to uncover how the food of immigrants became a staple in New York popular culture, and what the future holds for this classic culinary institution.

Join New York Adventure Club and New-York Historical Society on a fascinating exploration of the rich history behind the Jewish Deli, and the Jewish immigrant experience that made the delicatessen so integral to New York culture.

Led by New-York Historical Society Docent Kyle Einhorn, our virtual experience exploring the Jewish Deli will include:

  • A brief overview of how New-York Historical Society came to host this exhibition, "I'll Have What She's Having": The Jewish Deli
  • Images of politicians and other notable figures eating and campaigning in delis
  • Movie clips and film stills that underscore the prominent role of Jewish delis in American popular culture
  • A close look at the expansion of Jewish communities at the turn of the 20th century, not just on the Lower East Side, but also in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx
  • Images of salvaged artifacts present in the exhibition, like the 2nd Avenue Delicatessen storefront sign, vintage meat slicers and scales from other delis, and also costumes by Emmy Award-winning costume designer Donna Zakowska from the popular Prime Video series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Kyle — any and all questions about the Jewish Deli are welcomed and encouraged!
