Event description

Description

Legendary musician, Herlin Riley will perform with his Quartet at the Hartley/Vey Studio at Manship Theatre as part of the Jazz Listening Room Series. New Orleans native Herlin Riley grew up in a musical family and began playing drums at the age of 3. Living in the Crescent City influenced Riley’s rhythmic soul to project him into an in-demand drummer in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Herlin was a member of Ahmad Jamal’s group from 1984 through 1987, and he has recorded with Marcus Roberts, Dr. John, Harry Connick Jr, George Benson, Benny Wallace, Mark Whitfield, and many more. In 1988 he joined the Wynton Marsalis’ touring and recording group, which he performed with through 1994. He also performed on the first Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra United States tour in the fall of 1992.

Mr. Riley will be featuring works off of his latest album entitled New Direction. This debut album on Mack Avenue Records features styles that are apparent in Herlin’s New Orleans influence. “As a boy growing up in New Orleans, way before you heard that big bass drum in the street parades, you could feel it coming from four or five blocks away, and it would literally beckon you to come down to the street, check out the music, and participate in it” Riley said.
