This course is ideal for a beginner, someone who has not learnt any java before. It will be a great experience for those who want to start programming either for a change of career, to gain experience before starting a degree in Computer Science or just to learn a very useful skill. You will get a chance to practice writing basic code and getting used to the syntax of java programming which is very important to developing as a programmer later on. Working with fellow students is encouraged through the tasks and discussions. This will also be a fantastic opportunity to meet, grow and network with other students who will be looking pick up and use a this new skill just like you! Your net worth is equal to your network.

The level 1 course has been designed for absolute beginners but students must be computer literate. The practical courses take place in a series of 2 hour lessons once a week over 5 weeks in London.

Course content

Lesson 1 : Java architecture, printing to the console, import statements, commenting code., data types.

Lesson 2 : Declaring and initializing variables. Using Scanner to take input from the user and how to make calculations using operatives.

Lesson 3 : If else statements, nested if else statements, switch statements.

Lesson 4 : For loop, do loop, while loop, do while loop.

Lesson 5 : Arrays, looping through arrays, using an if else statement with the arrays.

Lessons are structured in a way to teach the concepts, build a program and then finish with a quiz. Educational technology such as Nearpod will be used to reflect on what you’ve learnt and then you’ll be taught step by step how to create a program by working in pairs. The aim is to have some code written before you go home.

The end of class quiz uses Kahoot, an educational app that will have everyone in the room pulling out their phones and tapping for the answer in excitement. All of this is designed to promote active learning because we all learn more when we reflect on what has been taught through discussion with our peers, writing some code and by helping each other out.

This is a fantastic opportunity and could be your first step towards a new hobby or even a new career!

As a possible follow up the Level 2 course teaches object orientated concepts such as methods, objects, inheritance and more. It is the building blocks to how things work in java and is extremely valuable knowledge in learning more about the many tools which makes java useful.
