"The Economic Scramble for Africa: Gains and Pitfalls"

Featuring Mr. Peter Okwoche of BBC World News as keynote speaker.

Join us as we celebrate the 16th anniversary of our Lectures Series on Africa

Under the theme “The Economic Scramble for Africa: Gains and Pitfalls”, the evening will include a silent auction, raffle draws, dinner, African cultural dancers, and culminate with dancing to music from across the continent.

An “Evening in Africa” is a charity event that serves as a key fundraising vehicle the Ivory Club of Tampa Bay relies on to support its key programs such as:

  • Annual University of South Florida (USF) Endowed Scholarship, initiated in 1999

  • International Student Exchange Program where recipient USF Students are sent to an African university for a semester

  • Disaster relief, social assistance, and Reading Programs among others.

This year’s fundraiser will be focused on funding the "Ivory Center", our proposed African Cultural Center.

The raffle draw will include top giveaways including large LG 4K HDR Smart LED UHD TV, 10'' Amazon Fire Tablet with Alexa, Tickets to Tampa Bay Rays Game, Lowry Zoo, Tampa Bay Aquarium, Morean Art Center (St. Pete) and Mosi, and store gift cards from Publix, Sam's Club, and Top Golf.

Lecture Excerpt: "The Economic Scramble for Africa: Gains and Pitfalls"

On January 31st 2020, the UK will officially depart the European Union. The UK government has made no secrets about the fact that it wants to strengthen ties with the African countries post BREXIT and the recent UK Africa summit was to do just that. China, Russia, Turkey , India and Saudi Arabia have all held Africa summits in the last year in a hope to boost investment with Africa, infact, Boris Johnson described Africa as The beautiful Bride that the world is courting, but what is Africa getting in return? Are the present African governments prepared and experienced enough to maximize the advantages of this Scramble? Many analysts believe not.
