What Happened to the Children?: The Orphans of the Irish Famine and the Canadian Quarantine Station at Grosse Ile by Chuck Arning

About this Event

What Happened to the Children?: The Orphans of the Irish Famine and the Canadian Quarantine Station at Grosse Ile by Chuck Arning, Public Historian and retired National Park Service Interpretive Ranger.

During the winter of 1847 a vast number of barely seaworthy vessels, commonly referred to as “Coffin Ships,” set sail for Canada with sick, diseased and starving Irish families. Between June 1847 and early September 1848, over 600 orphans were sent to Quebec City from the quarantine station on Grosse Ile. Chuck will discuss what happened to the children.
