The Intelligent Black Woman, Shakia Johnson’s MFA Thesis Concert

This concert work presents Choreographer and Five College Dance Lecturer Shakia Johnson’s MFA Thesis research. Her research focuses on the intersections of Black Women, social dancing, education, religion, African History linked to the U.S., all elements of Hip Hop culture, and specifically female pioneers within Hip Hop and Jazz era culture. Her work explores questions such as: How have African American women informed/influenced the evolution of Hip-Hop? How have they been treated in the process? How has her life personally been informed/influenced by her experience as a Black woman in Hip-Hop (particularly as an artist-educator)? Johnson is interested in the way these questions lead her and her students, collaborators and audiences to an appreciation for vulnerability. She acknowledges that this vulnerability is, in and of itself, an aspect of Black women’s intelligence that emerges as they engage/engaged with Hip-Hop culture. How does this type of intelligence invite us all to inhabit ourselves, our movement and our witnessing with depth and meaning?
