Live Interview with The Amazing Spider-Man co-screenwriter and Mythology Entertainment's James Vanderbilt
A Webinar Brought
to You by Final Draft, Inc.

James Vanderbilt sold his first spec script two days before graduating USC and went on to write and produce the true-life crime thriller Zodiac, directed by David Fincher, for which he received a WGA Award nomination.

Vanderbilt co-wrote this summer's The Amazing Spider-Man, drawing on his significant skills at character development. He was quickly asked back to write the sequel. He is currently adapting the British mini-series Red Riding for producer Steven Zaillian and director Ridley Scott as a feature, and rewrote the RoboCop remake for director Jose Padillha and MGM.

If that isn't enough, his latest spec sale, White House Down, was picked up by Sony this past April, with Vanderbilt producing through his Mythology Entertainment banner.  Roland Emmerich is directing Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, and Maggie Gyllenhaal in the film, which begins shooting this fall. And John Madden is slated to direct Charlize Theron in Vanderbilt's original Murder Mystery, which he is producing along with Tripp Vinson, Endgame Entertainment, and Tower Hill.

Vanderbilt is a founding member of Mythology Entertainment, along with Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar) and Bradley Fischer (Black Swan).  Besides White House Down, their producing projects include HBO's The Lobotomist with Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way and feature adaptations of John Bellairs' young adult series The House With A Clock In Its Walls and Richard Morgan's novel Altered Carbon.

During this informative webinar, we will ask James Vanderbilt questions that will cover topics screenwriters need to know like:
  • What is the most important thing you learned about screenwriting from USC?
  • How do you approach a story (with outlines, treatments, note cards, etc.)?
  • What did you learn from working with Alvin Sargent?
  • What are some of the challenges of working with established characters and series?
  • How do you approach a script you are brought in to rewrite?
  • What are the biggest flaws with character in the scripts that you read and rewrite?
  • How has being a producer affected the way you approach screenwriting?
  • When writing original scripts, how do you go about developing your characters?
  • What are your tips for revealing character through dialogue?
  • How do you handle exposition and backstory without bogging down a script?
  • What advice do you have for aspiring screenwriters?
  • .... and so much more!

As an aspiring screenwriter, you've asked these questions on message boards, at conferences, and to consultants. But now is your chance to ask an experienced and award-winning screenwriter what you need to know about succeeding in today's industry.

Don't miss this opportunity to find out what James Vanderbilt has learned about the craft of screenwriting, and how you can use his knowledge to make your script even better.

About James Vanderbilt:

JAMES VANDERBILT sold his first screenplay 48 hours before he graduated from the University of Southern California’s Filmic Writing Program, because that will help you make friends at film school. The keynote speaker at his graduation was Spider-Man producer Laura Ziskin.
Vanderbilt wrote and produced the true-life crime thriller Zodiac, directed by David Fincher and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. Vanderbilt received a Writers Guild of America Award nomination for his screenplay about the hunt for the serial killer who terrorized the San Francisco area in the 1970s, based on the book by Robert Graysmith. His most recent screenwriting credits include The Rundown and The Losers.
Esquire Magazine profiled him in their Genius Issue, calling him a Fearless Screenwriter. He is terrified of the following in no particular order: meeting new people, insects, dancing, the dark, Jell-o, werewolves, and the Rapture. He’s generally considered a nice guy and will crush all those who oppose him.
