The Inner Ground Railroad "River Jordan"
Event Information
Description
The Inner Ground Railroad Exhibition essentially ask one question: “What if the only true path to freedom is the path within?” The Exhibition will feature over twenty Atlanta based visual artists, and the works of art will stretch across three different Fulton County Arts & Culture facilities.
The Inner Ground Railroad will begin on Feb. 8th, 2019 at South West Arts Center with its first opening reception “River Jordan.” River Jordan once considered among freedom seekers as a code name for the Ohio River, will feature some of Atlanta’s best visionary painters, and photographers. The second stretch of the Inner Ground Railroad exhibition titled “Drinking Gourd” will take place at the South Fulton Arts Center on Feb. 9th, 2018. Drinking Gourd, which was used as a code name for the big dipper, will feature works of art by several well-known professional artists like Melissa A. Mitchell, Fabian Williams, Melissa Alexander, Miya Bailey, and the great Arturo Lindsay. The Inner Ground Railroad will conclude with Promised Land, an abbreviated exhibition and a master series workshop by artist/curator Brian Hebert at the Aviation Community Cultural Center on Feb 23rd, 2018. The workshop will explore the exciting relationships between rendering and conceptual art as it relates to personal sovereignty.
Freedom does not start from the outside. Although external conditions have a part to play, that is not where freedom originates. Authentic freedom arises initially from inner conditions. Its deepest roots are already within us. The Inner Ground Railroad aims to treat viewers to a glimpse of this idea this Black History Month!
