Description

The 2018 Spring Educational Conference of the Black Psychiatrists of America will focus on the intersectional issues of contemporary socio-cultural and geo-political issues that affect the mental health and well being of African American people in the USA and the Diaspora. This conference will explore coping mechanisms, prevention strategies as well as confront how the cultural and political climate in the USA today is affecting those persons who have been identified as suffering with mental and emotional conditions. It will further look also at those not identified as having a mental disorder who are at risk for the development such conditions.

Exploration of how the health care community at large and the mental health profession, in particular, can begin to work cooperatively in mitigatIngram risk factors, coordinate treatment and work more effectively towards healing a nation divided along racial, gender and class lines. While the primary focus will be on African Americans, the overall goal will be to develop knowledge and strategies that are applicable across ethnic, religious, cultural, and political boundarues to heal a divided and wounded nation.

The format will consists of scientific papers, panels, poster sessions and discussion groups. Mental health professionals, civic leaders, criminal justice professionals, family medicine, general health care providers, public policy and public health professionals as well as community leaders interested in healing are all welcome.
