Event description

Description

A Community Conversation

For professionals and volunteers who work with children and teens in Wilton

Why is this topic important?

  • Children's freedom to play and explore on their own, independent of direct adult guidance and direction, has declined greatly in recent decades.
  • Research shows a rise in anxiety and depression in children and adolescents, and there is a decline in the emotional resilience of college students.
  • Are these related?

Through free play children learn to:

  • Think creatively and make decisions
  • Make friends and see from others’ points of view
  • Solve problems and negotiate differences
  • Exert self-control and follow rules
  • Regulate emotions, manage fear and control anger

Dr. Gray will present his research on play and facilitate a discussion about what actions we might take in our community to provide more opportunities for free play.

Check in and light breakfast at 8:30 am. Presentation begins at 9:00 am.

This event is made possible with generous funding from the Wilton Woman’s Club/Wilton Youth Council Joint Initiative to Prevent Substance Abuse.
