Event description

Description

From 2018 to 2019, the number of asylum seekers and unauthorized immigrants from Central America arriving at the United States border has doubled. Many arrive with children, trying to escape poverty and crime, but find a system that is not prepared to care for them, resulting in family separations, incarceration, poor conditions and tragedies. What can be done to meet this immigration surge and what policies should be changed?

Speakers will include attorney Jim Delgado, of the Shapiro Delgado firm –will focus on immigration laws and how they should work.

Luz Corcuera, Executive Director, Unidos Now - will focus on the community and our immigration policy impact.

Professor Jody McBrien of the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, who has studied refugee situations and resettlement worldwide, will discuss international obligations and humanitarian support.

Doors open at 11:15 am, and a buffet luncheon is provided at 11:30 am ($5 donation asked). After speakers give their presentations, there will be questions from the audience and discussion. All Hot Topic programs are free of charge and are open to the public.
