Fleeing the Nazis, young Anna’s family abandons their elegant house near Prague Castle. Once safely in New York, can she become an American girl in a city teeming with immigrants and prejudice? And when her family decides to sue for the return of their house in Prague, who will prevail?
The book is a wonderful remembrance by Ms. Perlberg of her childhood in Prague in a home next to the Castle, the family’s escape from the German occupiers in 1939, and their eventual adjustment to American culture and life. She also relates the stories of several of her relatives who were survivors of the Holocaust. The book ends with Ms. Perlberg’s recovery of her family home in Prague after the Velvet Revolution.
