New to tango? Welcome!

Argentine tango is a very deep dance, perhaps the deepest of the "partner dances." However, the joys of connection and improvisation that make this dance unique, are available even to absolute beginners. Let's make that happen for you! Here's how: Get a "Beginners" ticket, show up at 5:45pm, and I'll literally walk you through how to have pleasure your first time at a milonga.

What's "Old" that's "New" about this milonga?

Most of what follows is directed to the men in our dance community. Please take a moment to read before you decide whether you're coming or not.

Respect and safety for women dancers. That means:

- Men on one side of the room, women on the other.

- "Cabeco" applies. This means: No direct asks. You must catch the eye of the woman you want to dance with, then walk over and lead her onto the dance floor. Afterwards, you lead her off the floor back to her seat.

- The dance is about her pleasure and her safety as a follow, not your ego as a lead. Be patient. Take your time. Don't give "instruction" on or off the dance floor. Find the "common ground" between yourself and your follow and find the pleasure there. Don't make her work for your ego's benefit.

What's "New?"

You'll hear lots of Golden Age music (because it's simply the best for this art form). But you'll also hear lots of other music — it may be blues, jazz, New Age, pop. This is because tango can be danced to any kind of music, and it's good to stretch ourselves musically and creatively. Plus, different kinds of music inspire different kinds of dancers. It's good to mix things up.

Yes, there's a dress code

Women, thank you for always taking the time and effort to look lovely.

Men, take a moment to make yourself worthy of your follows' loveliness. (And, please, shower or bathe before coming to milonga. I've heard too many stories of women having to suffer through a tanda, breathing in a man's bad hygene).
