Event Details

Join The Hive Society for the 3rd annual #HoustonCares service project as we partner with Houston Food Bank to host the largest, single-shift service project.

September is Hunger Action Month.  However, this September also marks a period of resilience in the face of recovery.

An unprecedented number of people in the greater Houston area are affected by the flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey as the storm unleashed monumental destruction across southeast Texas.  For individuals who already struggle to provide for their family’s basic needs, the flooding is even more catastrophic.

The Houston Food Bank and The Hive Society have worked tirelessly to provide food and supplies in the short term, and will continue to do so in the months to come. We hope that you, your friends, family, coworkers and colleagues will join us on September 30th for an afternoon of service that will mean more than it ever has to the communities we serve as they rebuild their lives.

Houston Cares Flyer - Date September 30, 2017 from 1-4 PM

Volunteers will donate their time and effort to a 3-hour service project at the Houston Food Bank on Saturday, September 30th from 1 - 4 PM. For more information, visit HiveSociety.com/HoustonCares

About Houston Food Bank:

The Houston Food Bank is America’s largest food bank in distribution to its network of nearly 600 hunger relief charities in 18 southeast Texas counties. Named 2016 Food Bank of the Year and top charity in Texas by Charity Navigator for financial performance and accountability, the Food Bank provides 59 million nutritious meals to food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers and other agencies, feeding 800,000 people each year. Fresh produce, meat and nonperishables are distributed from the warehouse at 535 Portwall, and hot meals are prepared and distributed from Keegan Center, a 15,000 square-foot industrial kitchen. Additional community services range from nutrition education to assistance with food stamp applications and hands-on job training. Red Barrels offer a convenient way for grocery shoppers to donate nonperishables for their neighbors in need.

The Houston Food Bank, founded in 1982, is a certified member of Feeding America, the nation's food bank network. The organization plans to grow to an annual distribution of 100 million nutritious meals by 2018. Visit HoustonFoodBank.org for more information.

FAQs

What will I be doing?

Most of the projects at the warehouse involve inspection, sorting, and repackaging of donated food items for community distribution. These efforts benefit programs like Backpack Buddy, Senior Box Program, and Keegan's Kitchen. Volunteers with different and/or abilities will be accommodated as best we can.

Why do I have to register twice?

Good question! Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Registering with the Houston Food Bank allows us to make sure you have a productive volunteer experience. Registering with The Hive Society allows us to make sure you have a #HiveLife volunteer experience. Remember the prizes? Do it for the prizes!

Do I have to create a Houston Food Bank volunteer profile?

Yes. All volunteers  ages 18+ must create a Houston Food Bank volunteer profile.

This will allow adult volunteers to digitally sign the volunteer waiver before arriving, significantly speeding up the check in process. Not already a volunteer? Please create a Houston Food Bank Volunteer Profile by clicking here

Okay, I get that, but do I really have to create a volunteer profile?

During service projects, every minute counts and we want our volunteers to spend as much time as possible fighting hunger! By creating your Houston Food Bank profile prior to the event, you will be able to digitally sign your waiver and receive your volunteer bar code. On September 30th, you'll walk in to the Houston Food Bank, scan your bar code and get straight to work fighting against hunger. Skip the registration line and head straight to the service fun!

Is there an age limit to enter the event?

The Houston Food Bank Portwall Warehouse can accommodate volunteers as young as 6  years old accompanied by their parent or guardian. Groups of up to 10 volunteers between 6 and 15 years old must be chaperoned by at least one adult. Volunteers ages 16 and 17 can volunteer without a parent/guardian, but must bring in a waiver with a parent/guardian signature. All minors must submit a waiver signed by a parent or guardian when they arrive to volunteer.  Please see the attached minor waiver here

Adult volunteers 18 years or older are required to register with Houston Food Bank. You will be redirected to HFB's registration page after completing Eventbrite registration.

Can I register a group of volunteers?

Absolutely! The Hive Society and Houston Cares' success will depend on large groups of volunteers to come together for this day of service. Companies, student and professional organizations, schools, churches, and volunteer groups are all welcome to join us.

Please only create Teams for groups of 10+ people.

To register as a group, a team captain or "Group Manager" can select "Create a team" and:

 - Register others for the group and event

 - Invite others to the group

 - Email group members

 - Update group page details, including the image and group name

Alternatively, if you know a team you would like to join is already established, simply select "Join a Team", type all or  part of the team name in the search box, then select the appropriate team to join.

Will my group be assigned to the same project(s)?

We understand the importance of volunteering with friends and family! The Houston Food Bank and The Hive Society will make every reasonable effort to keep groups on the same projects. However, it is strongly suggested that groups arrive and check in together to best ensure they can work the same project. In the event that your large group gets split between two or more service projects, we ask that you are all good sports. Get to know new people and remember the most important fact of the day: you're fighting against hunger!

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

For any questions, use the Contact Organizer button on Eventbrite or email Volunteer@HiveSociety.com with "#HoustonCares" in the subject line.

Where do I go and where can I park?

535 Portwall St.
Houston, TX 77029

From Downtown: Take IH-10 east and exit Gellhorn St. (exit #774). Make a U-turn at Gellhorn, stay on feeder and turn right on Portwall St.

If space permits it, you may park in the front parking lot, but due the expected large volunteer turnout, you may be directed to Houston Food Bank's overflow lot located behind the building.

What can/can't I bring with me?

As a safety precaution, cell phones are not allowed to be out and backpacks/purses are prohibited in most project areas. Houston Food Bank has limited available free lockers, so please be mindful of this.

Don't worry. There will be planned social media breaks so you can share a #Helpie.

How do I dress for the event?

Closed-toe shoes are REQUIRED - smashed toes are no fun, so we strongly enforce this safety precaution. Casual dress, long pants (preferred), shirt with sleeves.

All of the Houston Food Bank's Rules and Guidelines must be followed.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

You will not need to bring your Houston Cares eventbrite confirmation. However, adult volunteers need to bring their Houston Food Bank QR Code (provided via email from Houston Food Bank after you register here). Digital QR codes displayed on your phone/tablet will also be accepted.

All minors must submit a waiver signed by a parent or guardian when they arrive to volunteer.  Please see the attached minor waiver here.
