About this event
Thanks to exponential improvements to America’s railroads, highways, and infrastructure during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Americans began exploring the growing number of National Parks in record numbers. This movement led to the development of a new form of travel known as the mobile home. From "camper" trailers that that symbolized comfort and ingenuity, to motor homes that became icons of middle class leisure, it's time to uncover the story of the American recreational vehicle.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the American history of the mobile home, from its earliest examples in the 1900s, to the glory days of the post-war period, to the modern-day resurgence in the ultra-luxury market.
Led by architectural historian David V. Griffin of Landmark Branding, this digital showcase surrounding the history of mobile homes in America will include:
- The origins of the first recreational vehicles in America aimed at wealthy clientele
- The evolution of RVs and “Motor Houses,” along with other forms of mobile homes including the houseboat and private railcar
- The cultural and sociological impact of the trailer park
- An in-depth look at how Americans’ perspective of the mobile home changed with everything from the Interstate System to the gas crunch of the '70s
- A peek at what today's top-of-the-line recreational vehicles look like
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with David — any and all questions about these unique vehicles are welcomed and encouraged!
