About this Event

NOTE: THIS EVENT IS AT THE PAX UNPLUGGED TABLETOP GAMING CONVENTION

The Colonia Revolutionary War is over. The Barony’s colonial administrators are dead, and the remains of its Expeditionary Army are scattered. A new and hopeful Republic rises. But the peace is uneasy, Colonia’s industry stands idle, and the mysteries of the revolution hang heavily in the air.

Now, at the world-renowned Helios Grand Hotel, a meeting of Colonia’s most powerful players has been set. Here they will find their place in a new order — whether through negotiation, subterfuge, or force of arms.

But it will take more than words or even weapons to win the game. Knowledge is power.

The story of the revolution is complex; and hidden agendas abound. Every faction has their own mysteries to solve — and their own secrets to share. And only those who can see the big picture can hope to make right plays.

An Immersive Experience

This year we have a 2900 square foot ballroom, transformed with lighting, audio, and furnishings, and sub-divided with 8’ tall dividers. Each faction can expect their own room, connected to others through corridors and common areas. The presence of additional spaces is rumored. The Helios Grand Hotel has secrets of its own.

Gameplay

In the Helios Conspiracy, groups of up to six players will become one of the 10 factions. Each faction has its own unique narrative, interwoven with others. Factions discover and advanced their narrative by solving puzzles (unique to each faction), playing mini-games with or against other factions, trading resources and information, and making difficult narrative choices.

Within each faction, individual players may divide their time between all activities, or focus on specific activities depending on their interest.

This is a 105 minute experience: a 15 minute orientation followed by a 90 minute game.

The Factions

Each faction is unique as is its relationship with the others. Some are natural allies, others are hated enemies. Some factions may never cross paths at all.

Below is only peak at each faction’s background, motivation, and goal. This is a game of unexpected discoveries and hidden agendas. Giving too much information about each one’s intentions would spoil things.

Some of these factions may not be at all what they seem…

The Colonia Republic

The depredations of the Barony’s Colonial Administration became too much to bear. So we rebelled. And won. Now we are a new government taking shape. But the Barony and their patrons remain a presence on Colonia. Our people are uncertain. And there are even those within the revolution who think we have not gone far enough. Nonetheless, with the support of the people, we will move forward, uniting an independent Colonia, one way or another…

The Barony of Ys

The revolution has, it seems, put an end to over 200 years of colonial rule by the faraway Barony of Ys. We, the remains of the Colonial Administration — elevated by the untimely deaths of our superiors — must now deal with the new revolutionary government, the so-called Colonia Republic. We must find a way to protect the interests of Ys despite the revolution…

The Radicals

They say the revolution is won. But Barony troops still stand on Colonia soil, Barony loyalists remain organized and unpunished, and the so-called heroes of the revolution drink coffee with Barony governors and Romanov taskmasters. Meanwhile, we who fought longest and hardest are called terrorists and fanatics. They say the revolution is won. But it has only just begun…

The Loyalists

There was peace and prosperity for all — certainly, for all of us. But then came the protests, then the skirmishes, then the war — and now revolution. We aided and even fought for the Barony of Ys, as was our duty. It didn’t go our way. But we are still Colonian, and we still have a place here — a place that we are prepared to fight for…

The Transnational League

We are an international delegation of diplomats and investigators sent by the Transnational League, and tasked with mediating a peace agreement between the remains of the Barony’s colonial regime and the revolutionary government. As always, our work isn’t limited to diplomacy. League officials believe that certain strange events and uncanny circumstances leading up to the revolution must be tracked to their source if we’ve any hope of lasting peace.

The Romanov Family

The Romanov Family mines are the only known source of the world famous and much-coveted helios diamonds — a central pillar of the Colonian economy. The Romanovs have grown rich and powerful under generations of Barony rule. Now, revolution has come. And the Family must show that we’ve not grown complacent as our enemies prepare to strike…

The Haulers Union

The Romanov Family own the mines, but it’s the haulers who work in them. And scarcely any of them feel like they’ve gotten their due. Some of us have started to take action. ‘It’s been tried many times before’, our fathers and grandfathers say, ‘and the Family always wins’. But that was all before the revolution. This time things will go differently…

The Du Bois Quarterly

An international taste-maker for more than 50 years, the Du Bois Quarterly Journal is known for its avant garde cultural commentary and lurid tales of scandal and vice among the world’s rich and powerful. Many journalists envy the insider access Du Bois writers somehow always manage to get, and wonder at the Journal’s closely guarded methods. The Journal’s team has arrived at the Helios just in time for the meeting. And the Journal’s next story may be the most scandalous one yet…

The South Seas Company

One of the world’s largest trading outfits, the South Seas Company has a fleet to rival many nations. And it is the only company trusted by the Barony of Ys to ship helios diamonds from Colonia to markets around the world. The revolution may be bad for business, but it could also mean new opportunity.

The staff of the Company’s Colonia Outpost are now tasked with assessing new risks, securing Company assets, and — should the opportunity arise — taking all reasonable measures to advance Company interests…

The Helios Grand Hotel

The revolution’s namesake, the place where it started, and the place where it may end — and not by accident. Under the leadership of the hotel’s reclusive owner, the staff of the Helios act as fixers, advisors, and power-brokers at all levels of Colonial society. They know who comes and goes, and they hold keys to all the doors…

PLEASE ARRIVE ON TIME!

Groups who arrive late and miss the orientation may find not only find themselves at a disadvantage but may disrupt the flow of play for other groups.
