“The 51st Annual Freedom Gala & Awards is taking place 50 years after the 1967 summer of riots, urban unrest and sacrificial resistance in Grand Rapids. This year’s theme - Revolution: The Shift - is a clarion call for all of us to not only resist but to commit ourselves to being true revolutionaries in our own and unique way to change systemic and institutional racism, poverty and militarism in 2017. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. eloquently articulated and provided a moral blueprint in 1967 for a revolutionary shift in order to effectively respond to the systemic issues and the social paralysis that still exist 50 years later across this nation. Therefore, on this 51st anniversary of the NAACP Greater Grand Rapids Branch Freedom Fund Gala, we affirm it is time for a Revolution: The Shift!”
