THE GRAPES OF WRATH IN WORD AND SONG
Sunday, January 30
1:30 p.m. • Michigan Historical Museum
702 W. Kalamazoo St. • Lansing • (517) 373-1359
Join artists from Michigan State University’s College of Music and Department of Theatre in an afternoon of excerpts from Ricky Ian Gordon’s monumental operatic adaptation and Frank Galati’s stirring theatrical rendering of John Steinbeck’s novel of the Dust Bowl.
Ricky Ian Gordon, the opera’s composer, is one of the pre-eminent composers on the American scene today, and The Grapes of Wrath, which premiered in Minnesota in 2007, was hailed as “the great American opera.” Melanie Helton of the MSU College of Music will be creative director of the performances. Both performances (Grand Rapids and Lansing), which are free and open to the public, will be followed by a panel/audience discussion facilitated by John Beck, professor from MSU’s School of Human Resources and Labor Relations.
