After the Union navy took control of the coastal waters of the South Atlantic in November 1861, many Georgia planters moved inland, often leaving their slaves behind to fend for themselves. The Union ships picked up many of the stranded ones and faced the dilemma of what to do with them. One solution was to establish a Negro colony on St. Simons Island. This session describes the experiment
