About this Event

The Graduate Center, CUNY Presents UNDERSCORED: Copland Piano Quartet

“Wonderful music, warm performances, full of humanity and empathy, confident and transparent." New York Classical Review

Aaron Copland’s haunting Quartet for Piano and Strings is a major work written at the height of the iconic composer’s career. Having already, by age 50, composed so many popular works that made his name widely recognized, the always-adventurous Copland turned to the gestures, techniques, and sound world of a darker, brooding Viennese Expressionism, and re-purposed them into a rich, refined, and lyrical idiom for this masterful Piano Quartet. And yet, the piece remains infrequently heard, and most listeners and even many veteran performers barely know of its existence. Join Music from Copland House for a rare performance of this stunning work, preceded by a pre-performance discussion about the music with the artists, and followed by a live Q&A between viewers and Alexis Pia Gerlach, Michael Boriskin, and John Graziano.

Music from Copland House Artists: Danielle Farina, violist; Alexis Pia Gerlach, cellist; Michael Boriskin, pianist.

Graduate Center Artists: Pala Garcia, violinist
