AGENDA

 

Wednesday, March 20th 2019: 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

GME School & Reception: What is the current funding/governance system, how did we get here and what problems have been identified?

Goal: Broaden the base of stakeholders with a deep understanding of GME issues, provide networking opportunity 

Objective: In-depth education on issues related to graduate medical education and graduate medical education reform, and explore the universe of stakeholders involved.

Agenda:

4:00 pm - 5:00 pm: Reception

5:00 pm - 7:00 pm: GME School: History of GMEI, History of GME (beginnings of Medicare funding for GME), Basics about payment (IME/DME), GME size/scope/trends, past reform attempts/proposals, special cases, state based initiatives, stakeholders

7:00 pm - 8:00 pm: Dinner provided

 

Thursday, March 21st 2019: 8:00am - 5:00pm

  • Educate ourselves and others regarding the challenges and array of potential solutions to public financing of GME
  • Create opportunities for collaboration across communities, states, and the federal government
  • Continue an active conversation and problem-solve around ways to: 
    • Mitigate the inherent challenges of time-limited funding for GME (Community support, grant programs such as THC funding, State funding)
    • Outline potential solutions in the setting of perverse incentives and adverse unintended consequences in the current system of GME finance – State and Federal (gather and illustrate data which continually communicate to key stakeholders the need for ongoing funding)
