The Glen is a full length, coming of age play about a rebellious boy named Dale, adopted as an infant by a strict mother and ineffectual father, who grows up on a farm and later a boarding house in Grass Valley, California in the 1930s and 40s and doesn’t realize until after he’s joined the post-war Army that, in the language of the time, he’s “attracted to men”. The Glen follows Dale’s journey by way of present day action and flashbacks, from innocence to maturity, tracking his uncertain path as a Private falsely accused of insubordination by an underhanded Army Major, through his affair with a possible spy in 1950s Berlin and back to his ultimate confrontation with his unforgiving mother and the secret she has hidden from him all his life. The Glen is brought to life with remarkable characters, an Indian farmhand with an unusual perspective, a tough as nails Drill Instructor, a sympathetic Army lawyer, an unlikely German love, and Noel, a lifelong friend, as well as Dale’s family, all of whom help him along the road that leads him to his goal of self-recognition and insight. The Glen is dramatic and comic, an epic journey of memory, secrets, love, humor and self-discovery.
