"Grateful." "Disgusted." "Proud." "Embarrassed." The Yale Alumni Magazine’s recent cover story “Why They Call Yale The Gay Ivy” sparked a furor among its readers, igniting a larger controversy about homophobia, tradition and the generational divide in our country today. Out of this vehement and diverse alumni response was born The Gay Ivy, a musical theater piece featuring work by more than a dozen writers and composers. The resulting chorus of unique voices is a collage of different perspectives, interweaving monologue, song, movement and projections: talking to his barber, an alumnus recalls the “good old days;” in a lecture, a professor reveals a secret “Green Carnation Society;” in bed, two female students wake up in each others’ arms; in seminar, a legacy-student confronts his grandfather’s hatred and his own conflicted sexual identity.
