The Gatehouse is a wonderful Gothic Fantasy and was Time Out Pick of the Week at the 2016 Raindance Film Festival.
This fantasy horror is the third feature film from award-winning director Martin Gooch. Jack is a struggling writer recovering from the death of his wife. His daughter, 10 year old Eternity, loves digging for treasure in the forest behind her house. In a coincidental turn of fate, Jack agrees to undertake a writing project about the ‘legend of the black flowers’ at the same time that Eternity discovers a mysterious object in the woods. They’ve unlocked an ancient curse and must now fight for survival. The Gatehouse is a fantastical story of local legends and sinister mythical creatures, but it is the vivid exploration of psychological disturbance which sets this film apart. In an experimental narrative structure, this film charts Jack’s mental instability as he is haunted by the vision of his dead wife, and must overcome his grief whilst battling a menacing presence in his home. The audience is continually left guessing what is real and what is Jack’s imagined reality. Young actress Scarlett Rayner is magnetising as Eternity, bringing a playfully ominous element to this gory story. Not without its humorous quirks, The Gatehouse is an ambitious and bold gothic horror. (Raindance Film Festival 2016)
