The Future of Our Cities

Join Presidio Graduate School alumni, current students, and community members to discuss the Future of Our Cities. President Liz Maw will start the evening with opening remarks and we will then hear from Presidians  Amanda Fasenmyer, Thomas Crowley, Jimmy Jia, and Justin Bean as they bring their perspectives on urban sustainability, smart cities, multi-sector partnerships, and the designed environment. The panel will explore how future cities can be dynamic and sustainable for all citizens.

After the panel and Q&A, join the community for a reception to continue the conversation over beverages and hors d'oeuvres.

Amanda Fasenmyer, MBA, Director of Growth & Strategy, Steinberg Hart: Recently named by the Silicon Valley Business Journal as a 40 Under 40 honoree for her impact within the region’s business, government, academic, and nonprofit communities, Amanda is a recognized leader in the greater Bay Area community. She brings over a decade of expertise in forging meaningful relationships and building collaborative solutions to the role of Director of Growth and Strategy at Steinberg Hart.

Previously, Amanda served as the San Jose Development Manager and Interim Foundation Relations Manager for SPUR, a Bay Area non-profit focused on urban planning and governance. At SPUR, Amanda helped scale the organization’s reach and impact and partnered with the philanthropic and business communities to address the biggest challenges facing our cities.

Amanda holds an MBA in sustainable management from Presidio Graduate School and a Bachelor of Arts degree in management from Gettysburg College.

Justin Bean, MBA, Director of Smart Spaces and Video Intelligence Marketing at Hitachi Vantara: Justin Bean is the Director of Smart Spaces and Video Intelligence Marketing at Hitachi Vantara, which brings IoT solutions to market with the mission of social innovation.

Justin has worked with Silicon Valley startups and Fortune 500s that are applying IoT and other disruptive technologies to improve our lives and cities. He has worked in the US, Japan, and South Africa on projects that include smart cities, smart parking, electric vehicles, renewable energy, machine learning, and 3D printing. He was the recipient of the THINK Prize in from renowned innovation and design firm IDEO for their Financial Empowerment Challenge. He also served in Americorps NCCC with a focus on empowering disadvantaged communities, holds an MBA in sustainable management, and resides in San Francisco, California. 

Justin Bean

Thomas Crowley, MPA, LEED AP, Design Manager, Gensler: As a seasoned manager and sustainability professional with over 16 years of design, construction, and sustainability experience, Thomas brings a breadth of management and design leadership by guiding large, diverse teams for complex Architecture, Master Planning, and Sustainability focused projects. He currently works for Gensler, the world's largest international design firm comprised of 6,000+ professionals in 50 offices around the world, who's guiding vision is "To Create a Better World Through the Power of Design". He is a Design Manager in the San Francisco Community Flex Studio, serving clients in the Civic, Education, and Government sectors.

As an implementation-focused leader, Thomas provides creative, analytical, and detail-oriented skills to every design problem, with a strong passion for people and Triple Bottom Line thinking. He is a cross-disciplinary thought leader in Architecture, Design, Construction, Renovation, Sustainability, and Building System Optimization.

In addition to his MPA from Presidio Graduate School, Thomas holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Philadelphia University and is LEED-certified. 

Thomas Crowley

Jimmy Jia, MBA, Managing Partner, The Jia Group: Jimmy is the Managing Partner of The Jia Group, a boutique consulting firm that specializes in energy and environmental strategies for corporate management and governance. He has helped numerous organizations improve capital deployment decisions on energy infrastructure projects, saving money, reducing exposure to volatile pricing and improving competitive advantage. He sits on numerous board positions, including the Center for Sustainable Energy in San Diego and the CleanTech Alliance in Seattle.

He is an adjunct faculty at Presidio Graduate School and a Visiting Scholar at George Washington University. He’s published two books, authored numerous articles and is a frequent speaker on energy futurism. He received his MS and BS from MIT and an MBA from Oxford University.
