Description

A Discussion with Dan Russell, Google’s Uber Tech Lead for Search Quality, and User Happiness

Join us for a discussion with Dan Russell who studies user behavior for Google on Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 5 - 6:30 p.m. in the Seuss Room in Geisel Library. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. The talk will be recorded and available for post-viewing via The Library Channel.

Russell’s talk will focus on what literacy means today in an era of search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo and other web resources. Russell argues we need to rethink what it means to be literate, and to be a learner. He explains knowing how to frame a question, pose a query, interpret texts that you find, organize (and use) the information you discover, are all critical parts of being literate.

Modern search engines can’t always filter out bad or even fake information that is popular. Therefore, Russell advocates searching skills need to be taught to everyone as there are hidden mechanisms in search engines that users need to know about. During his talk, Russell will take a deeper look at the literacy trends that are currently taking place, how we are becoming perpetual students, and what this means for the future of learning.
